Live-in care for couples

Live-in care for couples at home.

When one partner's needs grow, couples are often told that the answer is a care home, sometimes two different ones. It is rarely the only answer. With live-in care for couples, one carefully matched carer moves into your home and supports one or both of you, each with your own personal care plan. The same house, the same bed and the same morning cup of tea, with help arranged quietly around all of it. We provide it across Surrey and the towns nearby.

The maths that matters

One carer and one bill for both.

Care homes charge per person and per room. Live-in care does not, which is why the difference for couples is considerable.

  • Stay together, in the home you share
  • One live-in carer supports you both
  • Each partner gets their own care plan
  • Keep your home, garden and pets

Two places in a care home.

often £1,400 to £1,800+ per person = £2,800 to £3,600+ per week combined

  • Two fees, because homes charge per person, per room
  • Often separate rooms, even for married couples
  • Different needs can mean entirely separate homes
  • The family home left behind, or sold

What's included

How one carer supports two people.

Two people rarely need the same things. Your carer works from a separate plan for each partner and holds the household together. Typical support includes the following.

A care plan for each partner

Two people, two plans, reviewed and adjusted separately.

Different needs, handled sensitively

One partner with dementia and one without, each supported with tact.

Meals for both of you

Home-cooked food at your own table, eaten together as always.

Medication for both

Two sets of prescriptions, prompted and recorded separately and safely.

Shared outings

Trips, appointments and familiar places, visited together again.

Protecting the caring partner

The workload is lifted before exhaustion takes its toll.

Night reassurance

Someone on hand if either of you needs help during the night.

Housekeeping

Laundry, tidying and shopping, with the home kept as you prefer it.

One carer, two people

How the day is planned for two.

Families often ask how a single carer can properly look after two people. The answer is careful planning: two individual care plans, arranged into one shared day.

1

The assessment covers both partners.

We sit down with each of you separately, covering your health, your routines, what you would like help with and what you would rather continue doing yourself.

2

Two care plans, one household routine.

Each partner gets their own written care plan. Your carer then builds a single daily routine that meets both: personal care for one while the other reads the paper, so that the same pair of hands is never needed twice at once.

3

Days planned around your shared life.

Meals together at your own table, outings you both enjoy and visitors welcomed as always. The care fits around your life as a couple rather than the reverse.

4

Reviews adjust each plan separately.

One partner's needs may grow faster than the other's. Regular reviews adjust each plan independently, so the right support is always in place for you both.

Live-in care for couples

one carer, one billfor both partners

Your couples' quote is confirmed at your free assessment, and one weekly bill covers care for both of you, often far less than the cost of two care home places. The free assessment, carer matching and regular reviews are always included, and there are no hidden charges. Every price is a starting "from" rate, and your exact quote is confirmed after a free physical assessment at your home. Same rates 7 days a week, with no weekend or bank-holiday premiums.

The maths of staying together

What two care home places cost.

Set side by side, the figures make the case for staying at home together clearly.

Two care home places for a couple.

Care homes charge per person, typically £1,400 to £1,800+ per week each. For a couple, that is £2,800 to £3,600+ per week combined, often in separate rooms and sometimes on separate floors. Extras such as hairdressing, outings and escorted appointments are usually charged on top.

Live-in care for the same couple.

One carefully matched carer supports you both at home on one live-in bill, from £1,575 per week total, not each, with your exact couples' quote confirmed at your free assessment. Two personal care plans, one household, your own bedroom and your own front door. Assessment, carer matching, reviews and backup cover are all included.

What the difference in cost buys.

The gap can exceed £1,000 a week. In practice that means the family home kept rather than sold, no decisions about selling taken in a hurry, and savings that last years longer, while you remain together in the home you know.

These figures are averages rather than a quote, and exact costs depend on each partner's needs. A free assessment gives you accurate figures for your own situation, with no obligation.

Decades together

Care needs need not mean living apart.

Many couples are told that separation is inevitable once care needs grow. It rarely is. One carefully matched carer can keep you both at home, together.

  • Individual care plans under one roof
  • The healthier partner supported too
  • Shared meals and routines protected
  • One weekly cost instead of two care home fees

Who it's for

Who live-in care for couples suits.

One partner with higher care needs.

One of you may need hands-on care while the other needs only a little help. Your carer supports each of you exactly as much, or as little, as required.

Both partners needing some support.

When everyday tasks are getting harder for you both, one live-in carer keeps the whole household running, with meals, medication, mobility and more.

One partner carrying the load alone.

Caring for a husband or wife alone is exhausting. A live-in carer takes on the work, so that you can be a partner first and a carer second.

Couples told they must live apart.

If you have been told that your needs are too different for you to stay together, please talk to us. In our experience there is almost always a way to keep a couple at home together.

How it works

Couples' care questions

Common questions about couples' care.

Yes. Single live-in care starts from £225 per full 24 hours (≈ £1,575/week); couples' care is quoted at your free assessment, with one carer and one bill for both of you. Because one carer supports the household, you are not paying twice. In a care home, fees of £1,400 to £1,800+ per week apply per person, or £2,800 to £3,600+ combined for a couple.

That is very common, one partner with dementia and one without being the usual example. Each of you has your own care plan, and we match a carer experienced in exactly that combination: hands-on support for one, a lighter touch for the other, and sensitivity about how it feels for you both. If needs grow beyond what one carer can safely manage, we will say so plainly and adjust the plan with you.

Care continues at home. Your carer goes on supporting the partner still at home, keeps the household running and can help with hospital visits. When your husband or wife is discharged, everything is ready for them, with no need to arrange support in a hurry.

A spare bedroom of their own, meals or a food allowance, and agreed daily breaks, with cover arranged by us if support is needed while they rest. It is the same arrangement as single live-in care: one household, one carer, one spare room.

Care can begin within 24 to 48 hours of your free assessment. We assess you both in one visit, at home or in hospital, build each care plan, and introduce you to your matched carer before anything starts. Call us on 01372 386222 to arrange it.

That is the most common arrangement we see: one partner with substantial hands-on needs, the other largely independent. The care plans reflect it. Most of the carer's day goes to the partner who needs it, while the other receives lighter support, such as a cooked meal and help with the shopping, and the freedom to be a husband or wife again rather than a full-time carer. The healthier partner is not an afterthought; protecting their wellbeing is part of the plan.

Everything is ready and waiting. Throughout the stay, your carer continues caring for the partner at home and can accompany them on hospital visits, so that neither of you is left alone. Before discharge, we update the returning partner's care plan around any new needs, collect any changed medication, and settle them back into their own bed. There are no emergency arrangements to make.

Yes, and for couples we particularly recommend it, because three people sharing a home is a genuine adjustment. A short-term live-in placement of a week or two lets you both experience the arrangement before any long-term decision, at the same weekly rate and with no trial premium. If it suits you, it converts seamlessly to permanent care, often with the same carer.
