Understanding personal care

Personal care at home, explained clearly.

Personal care at home means assistance with the intimate parts of daily life: washing, dressing, using the toilet and remaining comfortable. Accepting that assistance is difficult for most people. After managing these tasks independently for seventy or eighty years, allowing someone to help can feel like a loss. In practice it is the opposite. With a patient, discreet and well-trained carer, personal care restores what struggling alone removes: feeling clean, comfortable, properly dressed and entirely yourself. Families across Surrey, arrange it for exactly that reason.

What's included

What personal care at home includes.

Every visit follows your personalised care plan and provides only the help you have agreed to. Typical support includes the following.

Washing & bathing

A bath, shower or wash, safe, unhurried and private.

Dressing & grooming

Dressing and grooming to your own standards.

Continence care

Sensitive, matter-of-fact support with pads and products.

Toileting support

Discreet help getting to and using the toilet safely.

Oral & denture care

Daily care of teeth, dentures and mouth.

Hair, skin & nail care

Everyday grooming that keeps you comfortable and confident.

Shaving

A wet or electric shave, done as you prefer.

Mobility & transfers

Safe support in and out of bed, chairs and the bathroom.

Catheter & stoma support

Trained, confident help with catheter and stoma routines.

How we protect dignity

How we protect dignity during personal care.

The tasks themselves are straightforward; the manner in which they are carried out is what determines whether personal care is tolerable or welcome. Six principles shape every personal care visit we make.

01

A same-gender carer on request.

If you would prefer a female or male carer for personal care, tell us at the assessment and we will match you accordingly.

02

The same familiar carer each visit.

Intimate care from a stranger is difficult; from someone you know and trust, it becomes routine. You will see the same carer visit after visit.

03

Your own routine, kept intact.

A bath in the evening, a shave before breakfast, hair set a particular way: the care plan follows the habits of a lifetime rather than an agency schedule.

04

Privacy, discretion and closed doors.

Doors are closed and towels prepared before care begins, and conversation stays natural throughout. What happens in the bathroom remains entirely private.

05

Encouragement rather than taking over.

Carers assist with what has become difficult and encourage everything you can still manage yourself, because retaining independence is the purpose of the visit.

06

A care plan in your words.

Your care plan is written in your words, covering how you like things done and what matters to you, so every carer follows your lead.

Who it's for

When personal care at home helps.

Washing or dressing has become difficult.

Stiff joints, poor balance or low energy make the bathroom the highest-risk room in the house. A daily personal care visit makes it safe again.

Intimate care is straining family relationships.

Helping a parent to bathe alters the relationship. Passing intimate care to a trained professional allows you to return to being a daughter or son.

Recovery, or a long-term condition.

After a stroke, surgery or with Parkinson's or dementia, trained support protects skin, dignity and confidence while abilities change.

How it works

How to arrange personal care at home.

1

A free assessment at home.

We visit you at home, or in hospital, and establish what help you would like, in your own words.

2

A written personal care plan.

A plan built around your routines and preferences, including carer gender where you have one, with a clear written quote.

3

Matching you with a carer.

You meet your DBS-checked, trained carer before any personal care begins, so that trust is established first.

4

Ongoing reviews as needs change.

We adjust the care plan as needs change, and keep the family informed after every visit.

Care can begin within 24 to 48 hours of your assessment.

Personal care questions

Common questions about personal care.

Almost everyone feels this way at first, and it is an entirely normal reaction. Her carer will begin with whatever she is comfortable with, build trust over the first few visits, and let her set the pace. For most people the embarrassment settles within a week or two, once the carer is no longer a stranger.

Yes. If you would prefer a same-gender carer for personal care, or have any other preference, tell us at your free assessment and we will match accordingly. It is a common request and one we meet wherever we can.

Yes, one carer can support both partners in the same visit, each with their own care plan and their own preferences respected. For couples with greater needs, our live-in care for couples keeps loved ones together at home with round-the-clock support.

Yes. Our carers are trained to support catheter and stoma routines hygienically: emptying and changing bags, monitoring for problems, and informing the district nurse or GP if anything requires clinical attention. Each step is set out in the care plan.

Personal care can begin within 24 to 48 hours of your free assessment, including after a hospital discharge. You will meet your carer beforehand, so the first personal care visit is never with a stranger.
