Reablement is goal-based, time-limited support that rebuilds practical skills and confidence after illness, injury or a hospital stay, provided at home in Surrey. The objective is to reduce the amount of care required, not to increase it.

Understanding reablement
After a fall, an operation, an illness or a period in hospital, confidence is often affected more than physical capacity. Reablement differs from ordinary home care: it is a short, focused programme, typically a few weeks, in which a carer works alongside you to rebuild the everyday skills you have lost the habit of using, such as washing and dressing, preparing a full meal, or walking to the shop. Tasks are completed with you rather than for you, and the plan is explicit from the outset: if the programme works, the amount of support you need will fall.
What's included
Every programme is built around your own goals, meaning the tasks you want to manage independently again. Typical support includes the following.

From a cup of tea to a full meal, cooking again safely.

Practical tweaks, such as grab rails, lighting and trip hazards, that keep progress safe.
Establishing a reliable system that works without a carer.
We follow the therapy team's exercises and report progress back.
Support steps down as confidence returns, visibly and by agreement.
How reablement works
Most care plans expand over time. A reablement plan is designed to contract, and success is defined as your no longer requiring the service.
Not "personal care, twice daily", but goals expressed in your own terms: dressing yourself again, cooking Sunday lunch, walking to the shop for a newspaper. They are written down, and every visit is designed to serve them.
Your carer works alongside you, completing tasks with you rather than for you. It is slower than taking over, which is the intention: every task completed independently rebuilds confidence.
Each week the goals are reviewed together: what has been achieved, what needs more practice, and what comes next. Progress is recorded, and the plan is adjusted accordingly, in either direction.
As confidence returns, visits become shorter and less frequent until they are no longer needed. Where some ongoing help would still be useful, we will say so and move to hourly care. Where it would not, we will say that instead.

Reablement care at home
30-minute visits from £22. Every price is a starting "from" rate, and your exact quote is confirmed after a free physical assessment at your home. Same rates 7 days a week, with no weekend or bank-holiday premiums. The service is time-limited by design: you pay only while support is needed, and visits reduce as you progress. Council-funded reablement is often free for up to 6 weeks after hospital, and we will help you raise it with your council.

Reablement questions
Ordinary home care performs tasks for you, for as long as they are needed. Reablement helps you perform them yourself again and is deliberately time-limited, usually to a few weeks. The carer's role is coaching and encouragement rather than substitution. Success is measured by how much less help is required at the end of the programme.
Most programmes run between two and six weeks, with weekly reviews. Some people reach their goals sooner and others require longer. The plan follows actual progress rather than a fixed calendar, and it does not become an open-ended arrangement.
Frequently, yes. Councils often provide reablement free of charge for up to 6 weeks after a hospital stay, and it is not means-tested. Availability varies, so it is worth asking before paying privately, and we will help you put the right questions to Surrey County Council. Our funding guide sets out the options.
We will say so, and shape ongoing support around what remains, which is often a short hourly care visit a few times a week with the carer you already know. Equally, if further support is not required, we will tell you and withdraw, leaving a plan for staying well.
It is quicker on the day and slower overall. Every task performed for you is a skill you do not rebuild, and confidence declines quickly when it is not exercised. Our carers are trained not to take over: they keep you safe, break tasks into manageable steps, and allow you to complete them. That is what makes the progress durable.
